60 Second Shot Reflection

What I learned about the 60 sec film is that it is often difficult to come up with interesting concepts or compositions that require a time limit of one minute.  I found that each individual came up with very different ideas, yet had similar ideas when it came to camera movement and the distance at which the shot was taken.  I felt it was very interesting that almost every student played with this idea of using angle or “cropping” to create a certain feeling in the environment in which the students were in.  Some videos were reviewed as performances and others were more personal (autobiographies).  It was great seeing different compositions, colors, points of view, and types of cameras used.
I have become extremely comfortable in front of the camera through applying different emotions and facial expressions, trying to convey certain feelings of curiosity or confusion to the audience.  I felt my work was very different from other students; however, I felt it was important for me to introduce myself through a digital video, allowing for others to get a sense of how I am on camera.  I felt it was a quick and fun experience, jumping into a project that required no editing.  It gets people comfortable in making a video without the “extras” first.  It was a great idea to have no limitations, allowing for students to have the freedom to choose their composition and topic.  However, it is sometimes more difficult to have no guided focus or goal.  This experimentation allowed for me to learn a little about each artist.

  1. I struggled with the time constraint as well and not being able to edit to fit that constraint made it difficult. Your approach to the video was definatley different from the rest, probably the most personal one, i'd say.

  2. I think that if we really wanted to we all could have come up with very interesting concepts. And the ones we had where good. I do agree that we all did go in sort of the same direction as far as angles cropping and what not. If we continue to practice with the 60 sec idea we may end up coming up with better and more interesting ideas. Because although the time is short the possibilities are endless.

  3. From doing the video assignment last semester where we had to do the 1 minute monologues I became more comfortable in front of the camera than I thought I would, but I'm not sure how it would go if I had to talk about something more personal. Its a totally different experience filming yourself than it is coming up with a concept and having to film is.

And hey, if you see this before class on tuesday could you tell me what I missed the last 10 minutes? If we had any homework besides the blog responses?

  4. When you talked about the time constraint I must say I agree!! I found it very difficult to stay within the one minute window, but I also found it more powerful. You can easily take anything and make it obscure by easily twisting the camera. I think it would be awesome to have a little portfolio of several 60-second shots of unique thing just to try to play around with the idea.

I have to admit I wish I had your comfortability to be in front of the camera because I am super shy when it comes to that! I don't know why but I am for some reason.

  5. The one minute time limit frustrated me, especially with a performance, but I think it ended up working well. I found your video very interesting and unique. I find it very difficult to get in front of the camera, more so when being direct with the audience. I feel that with the type of video you created, it brought on an informative class discussion.

  6. You have definitely showed your comfort in front of the camera with the projects that you have done. I would have to agree about the difficulties that arise when very little focus is given. You are put in a position where you need to work with your own ideas, but then you are given just some restrictions on what you can do. I think that this is a process that puts most in a bind.

Also, I really enjoyed the work being done without editing or as you called it "extras". It really allows you to focus on the shooting portion of the process. You think more about the framing with the camera and now how you can crop it later.
